As I was about to leave the Sanetti Plateau, perched at over 4,000m in the Bale Mountains of south-central Ethiopia, I glanced over my shoulder to take one last look at this stunning lunar landscape.
The sun had just been sucked below the horizon and was casting an orange glow onto a low roof of cloud, silhouetting two mountain nyala beside a giant lobelia. These species, like many others up here, are found nowhere else in the world. As I raised my camera to freeze the moment, the nyala stopped eating and posed for the shot. At that moment a large eagle, not wanting to feel left out, soared silently into the frame to complete the image.
